October 2015: Harriet gave an invited talk on swift heavy ion irradiation of graphene (her PhD work in Helsinki) at the 21st international workshop on inelastic ion-surface collisions held in Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain.
October 2015: Elena gives an invited talk "Advanced materials for gas storage and military defence" at the 4th workshop "New Trends in Computational Chemistry for Industry Applications" held at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Barcelona, Catalunya.
September 2015: A new PhD student joins the group. Katherine Wickham will be co-supervised by Dr. Nick Besley, and will be working on computational studies of organometallic molecules and interpretation of their photophysical properties.
September 2015: Graphita 2015 Conference in Bologna, Italy was attended by five members of the group. Elena gave an invited talk "Electron beam induced chemical reactions involving nano carbon: theoretical perspective"; Steve gave a contributed talk entitled "Reaction kinetics of Stone-Wales transformations in graphene"; Alexander presented his work "Dynamics of single Fe atoms embedded into the graphene lattice" (contributed talk); and Matteo and Jack presented posters.
August 2015: Gerardo successfully defended his PhD thesis. Well Done!
August 2015: We welcome a new Postdoctoral Fellow to the group. Dr. Harriet Åhlgren will be working on molecular dynamics simulations of BN structures and modification of graphene by ion irradiation. Welcome, Harriet!
August 2015: Ho-Kei has been offered (and accepted) a post of Associate Professor at the Shenzhen Graduate School of the Harbin Institute of Technology, China, which he will begin in January 2015. Many congratulations and well deserved, Ho-Kei!
August 2015: Two PhD students, Steve Skowron and Jack Wadey, win the RSC Travel Grants to support their participation at the GraphITA 2015 Conference in September 2015 in Bologna, Italy. Steve will give a contributing talk and Jack will present a poster. Well done, both!
July 2015: Elena gives an invited seminar "Computational aspects of TEM" at the Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory, University of Birmingham, hosted by Prof. Richard Palmer.
July 2015: Dr. Anton Nizovtsev from the Nikolaev Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Novosibirsk, Russia visits the group for 1 month. Anton will be working on simulations of gas uptake in metal-organic frameworks.
June 2015: new postdoctoral research fellow joins the group. Ivan Derbenev comes from Troitsk Institute for Innovation and Fusion Research, Moscow, Russia, and he will be working on modelling electrostatic interactions in non-uniform charged media. Welcome to the group, Ivan!
June 2015: Ho-Kei gives an invited seminar "Dense columnar packings of hard spheres from sequential deposition - a route to new architecture in the scientific world" at the Department of Physics, Xiamen University, China.
June 2015: Michelle will be presenting a contributing talk "Computational screening of functional groups for efficient methane capture in metal-organic frameworks using weak hydrogen bonding" at the 38th British Zeolite Association Annual Meeting, which will take place in Chester in July 2015.
May 2015: Ho-Kei gives an invited talk "Dense columnar packings of spheres - a simple route to chirality" at the BIT 4th Annual World Congress of Advanced Materials in Chongqing, China.
May 2015: Elena gives a talk "Recent progress and remaining challenges in electrostatics" at the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Colloquium, University of Bristol.
March 2015: Elena has been promoted to Professor of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry.
February 2015: Elena gives a talk "Computational Transmission Electron Microscopy" at the SALVE Symposium 2015 in honor of the 80th birthday of Harald Rose, Ulm, Germany.
